I hate it when people say, “Oh, you teach hypnobirthing? That’s so trendy right now.”
Let’s talk about societal trends for a minute. Unlike fashion trends, societal trends last a lot longer, around 50 – 100 years.
The first humans on Earth date back to 2.5 million years ago. Since then humans have always given birth to their babies either outside or wherever they call home. It was only in 1940’s we started going to the hospital. As of 2010, this trend of going to the hospital started to change, more and more people want to have their babies at home because, overall, it is safer (loads of starts and research about this online – a blog for another time).
Hypnobirthing is not about having a home birth, it is about you having ownership of your birth, about you understanding and being prepared for birth. It’s about knowing you have choices and exactly what they entail.
Hypnobirthing is like organic fruit and vegetables – going back to what birth is supposed to be. Organic fruit and vegetable is fruit and veg before it was messed with. For me, that’s what hypnobirthing is. Back to the basics of birth, how your body works and the best way to facilitate birth. Hypnobirthing does not teach you how to give birth, your body already knows how to do that, it is about understanding birth and how your body works.
Due to Social Media, TV and modern life, birth has many layers of misinformation and poor education about birth that causes stress, anxiety, pain and sometimes, birth trauma. Hypnobirthing teaches you to cut back all these layers and work with your body and baby to have the best, most positive birth you can.
If humans have been going to hospital for 70-80 years, is hypnobirthing the trend? Or is hospital the trend?
